Seven Massachusetts General Contractors Worth Knowing

American flag among Boston high-rise buildings, black and white

"Which GCs are actually good to work for?" is one of the most common questions we get from candidates, and it's a fair one — a title and a salary number only tell you so much about what a firm is actually like day to day. This isn't a ranking, and it isn't every good GC in Massachusetts by a long way. It's seven firms we know well, in alphabetical rather than any ranked order, each worth a conversation for a different reason.

Channel Building Company — Wilmington, MA

Founded: 1964  ·  What they do: Commercial general contracting & design-build  ·  Size: ~25 employees

Channel Building has been a fixture north of Boston for six decades, and it shows in the tenure of the people who work there — average staff tenure runs past 15 years. The firm runs an integrated design-build model, meaning pre-construction and general contracting sit under one roof, and it has client relationships that go back decades rather than years. If you want to work somewhere small enough to know everyone and stable enough that people don't leave, this is a name worth knowing.

Commonwealth — Rockland, MA

Founded: 1979  ·  What they do: Commercial general contracting  ·  Size: Under 50 employees

Commonwealth has grown steadily since Frank Trainor founded it in 1979, and ownership has changed hands only once — current owner Chris Fontaine joined as a Wentworth co-op student in the mid-90s and worked every role in the business before buying the company from Frank around five years ago. Average tenure across the team runs close to 17 years, with staff currently celebrating 42 and 31 years respectively. The portfolio has grown from retail store renovations into ground-up and mixed-use work, including a 55,000-square-foot amenities building underway in Quincy. Worth knowing if you want a genuinely close-knit, in-office team where leadership is present day to day.

Dellbrook | JKS — Quincy, MA

Founded: 2005  ·  What they do: Commercial general contracting  ·  Size: One of Massachusetts's larger GCs, 40+ active projects annually

Dellbrook|JKS marked its 20th anniversary in 2025, having grown from five employees and four projects in 2005 into one of the Northeast's fastest-growing general contractors, working across education, healthcare, historic preservation, hospitality and residential. Recent standouts include The Newbury, a luxury senior living project in Brookline, and Leland House in Waltham, a Passive House project. If you want scale, sector variety and a firm that's still expanding its footprint across New England, this is one to know.

Elaine Construction — Newton, MA

Founded: 1947  ·  What they do: Construction management & general contracting  ·  Size: Third-generation, woman-owned

Elaine Construction is one of the most established woman-owned general contractors in Boston — founded in 1947 and now led by third-generation President and CEO Lisa Wexler, who's been named among the Boston Globe's Most Admired CEOs. Elaine holds Highwire's Gold Safety Award, the only woman-owned GC in the Boston area to have earned it, and works with an institutional client roster that includes MIT, Harvard Medical School, Tufts and Biogen. Worth knowing if institutional and life sciences work, and a genuinely different ownership story, appeal to you.

Green Leaf Construction — Leominster, MA

Founded: 2014  ·  What they do: Construction management & design-build  ·  Size: ~35–40 employees, grown from 3

Green Leaf is the newest name on this list, and one of the fastest-growing — from three employees at founding in 2014 to roughly 35–40 today, with close to 90% of clients returning for repeat work. The firm covers advanced technology, healthcare, education, commercial and industrial projects, with recent work including the Lowell Community Health Center and lab space for UMass Chan Medical School. Worth knowing if you want to be part of a firm that's still actively scaling and building its identity, rather than one that's already settled into its final shape.

New England Construction — Burlington, MA

Founded: 1985  ·  What they do: Construction management & general contracting  ·  Size: ~70 employees

New England Construction was founded in Rhode Island in 1985 by David Sluter and has grown into a genuinely diversified merit-shop contractor — auto, retail, multi-unit residential, life science, education, healthcare and industrial work all sit in the same portfolio. It's still family-run: David's son Matt Sluter has succeeded him as President and CEO, following the same kind of founder-to-next-generation transition you'll see elsewhere on this list. The Burlington, MA office puts them squarely in the Massachusetts market despite the Rhode Island roots. Worth knowing if sector variety and a "big company capabilities, small company feel" pitch actually appeal to you.

Structure Tone — Boston, MA

Founded: 1971 (Boston office since 1985)  ·  What they do: Corporate interiors construction  ·  Size: 5,700+ employees across 54 offices globally

Structure Tone is the outlier on this list by design — where the rest are regional, family-run or founder-led firms, Structure Tone (now part of employee-owned STO Building Group) is a genuinely national interiors specialist with a Boston office dating back to 1985 and a 20-plus-year relationship with Fidelity Investments alone spanning over 2,000 projects. If you want the option to move between markets and offices within one company, or exposure to large-scale corporate interiors work specifically, this is the name on the list built for that.

None of this is the whole picture — culture, fit and what a specific role actually looks like day to day matter more than anything above, and that's exactly the conversation we have with every candidate before a name goes on the table.
